The medical world has witnessed a groundbreaking development that pushes the boundaries of technology: A team of Swiss surgeons successfully performed an endoscopic procedure on a pig located in Hong Kong. However, the most remarkable aspect of this surgery is that the surgeons carried out the procedure from 9,300 kilometers away, using a PlayStation Move and a DualSense controller…
PS5 saved a life this time!
In a joint project between the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and ETH Zurich, a PS5 DualSense controller, along with a PlayStation Move controller, was used to perform the surgery. This innovative approach allowed surgeons to have full control over the animal, despite the distance between them, leading to a successful operation.
Dr. Shannon Melissa Chan from the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong made the following statement on the subject:
“Remote-controlled endoscopy not only provides remote surgical training and mentorship, but it also offers instant diagnosis and surgical care in remote areas, especially where local expertise is lacking. A distant expert can even teach trained nurses how to perform procedures. As endoscopic technology becomes more accessible, millions of patients worldwide will be able to receive timely diagnoses and treatments for gastrointestinal cancer.”
Another example of gaming technology being used in different fields comes from the U.S. Army. In 2014, Xbox controllers were reportedly used to test laser defense systems, with several test videos even being published regarding the matter.
